November Business Meeting Summary
by Andy Thompson, MSDC Secretary
October 2024 Business Meeting Synopsis
Kenny Reynolds, our club president who is out-going in more ways than one, called the business meeting to order. He welcomed everyone and for their service, thanked the three of the club’s past presidents attending the gathering. He noted that this is one of his last meetings as president.
He then called for the approval of the October business meeting minutes as published in the November Mineral Minutes. That approval was motioned, seconded with no discussion, and then unanimously approved. Kenny then called on club officers to provide their reports.
Looking forward, Kenney said that in December he would have enjoyed hosting a holiday party for the club but this year circumstances will prevent that from happening. Also, Kenny said, he is working on lining up a presenter for December and has several strong leads.
Reports from Club Officers
Secretary Andy Thompson made a plea for MSDC members to step up and help with the upcoming fundraising mineral sale taking place at George Mason University. The funds support the club’s annual donations to an undergrad geology student at George Washington University and also to the Smithsonian’s Department of Mineral Sciences.
Andy mentioned the need for help in two areas:
(1) to staff the club’s table throughout the weekend of November 23 and 24, and
(2) to donate to the club minerals, fossils, and related books that can then be sold.
He provided contact information and thanked those who have already volunteered.
Newsletter Editor Ken Rock seconded how much fun it was for him last year to volunteer and help sell the MSDC minerals, meet people, and learn more about minerals.
In Cindy’s absence, Ken also noted that the speaker for our January meeting will be Gene Meieran, a well-known collector of extraordinary minerals and philanthropist. Gene has not yet finalized a topic for his talk, but may be speaking about four key elements of building a collection, or, the four traumas of doing so. Details are forthcoming.
Ken also noted that, as editor, he would welcome members who have not yet contributed an article to the Mineral Minutes to consider doing so. “It would be really nice to get some new blood into the newsletter.” If interested, please contact Ken and he will work with you to help make it happen.
